that vice president biden will spearhead his administration's response to the newtown shooting. the president is not expected to go into detail on policy decisions. the national rifle association has broken it's silence issuing a statement that reads in part this. the nra is prepared to offer meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again. that's significant. >> can i stop for a second there? if progressives, if moderates, if conservatives that are concerned about these magazine clips and assault weapons, if they want to feel self-righteous and scream and yell, they can do it and we won't get a deal. this is like the fiscal cliff. in the end it's like in "lincoln" with the 13th amendment. if the nra comes out and says something like that, instead of everybody going, now that blood's on your hands, you know what? guess what? feel self-righteous. you can save lives, or you can feel self-righteous. beat your chest like jim and tammy faye bakker if that's how you sleep at night. if that gets you through the night, go ahead. i tell you what, the art of politics,

and lieutenant george are cinco of the newtown police department and the connecticut state police from what we know and don't know about yesterday's shooting at sandy hook elementary school. we know that the gunman has been didn't fied as 20-year-old adam lanza who first killed his mother and went to a kindergarten class in the school where he worked killing 27 people. 20 children, six adults and himself. two handguns were found at the school as well as a semiautomatic rifle. law enforcement told officials that the gun was licensed to the gunman's mother. president obama will address the media in his weekly address. we'll have that later. but some hope that he might make an effort to tackle gun control for the first time. the shooting the deadliest in history as raised questions about the gun laws but also school security and preparation. we're going to msnbc's chris jansing who is outside of nowtown in connecticut this morning. chris, can you give us an idea of what we're learning, what new facts have we acquired? >> from the time, chris, went off the air last night, we saw a large exodus fro

! ♪ >>> welcome back to "hardball." the tragic school shooting in newtown, connecticut, has put renewed focus, of course, not just on the guns but on school safety itself. the nra's wayne lapierre had this suggestion. >> i call on congress today to act immediately to appropriate whatever is necessary to put armed police officers in every single school in this nation and to do it now. >> but here is what it looks like when you run the numbers. slate magazine took a look at what a program to put armed guards in every school might cost. there are nearly 100,000 public schools in the united states and the average police officer makes about $55,000 a year. so a low ball estimate would be about $5.4 billion a year. what can we really do to keep our children safe from guns when they're at school? joining me an expert, mayor michael nutter of philadelphia and "the washington post's" columnist ewe yen robinson. eugene is also an msnbc political analyst. mayor nutter thank you for joining me because you're on the front line every time there's a death, a homicide in philadelphia. you know all the facts
